Why It’s Hard To Feel Sympathy For GH’s Willow Tait

Willow has finally looped in Michael on some choices she’s made.

There was once a time when Willow Tait was a sympathetic school teacher doing the best she could as a single young woman who left a cult and was inadvertently mixed up in a convoluted baby switch story. However, Willow has changed oh-so-much since then.

Willow Tait Made A Choice

When she pretended to still love Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard), her ex-boyfriend, and married him while she believed he was dying, Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) reputation began to suffer.

We all recoiled at the expression on her face when she realized he would survive and pondered what had become of this once-charming character who could only imagine returning to Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) and their cozy little life as they raised Wiley Corinthos. Right after sobbing over the anniversary of the death of her own newborn two years earlier, she even slept with Michael behind Chase’s back.

Since then, we’ve seen Willow raise her nose in the air at anyone who trespasses into her personal space and scream at anyone who disobeys Michael. She even made the unfortunate discovery that trying to ignore cancer simply doesn’t work.

GH: Willow Didn’t Think Ahead

Why Was Willow Tait Shocked?

In the end, Willow reached the second trimester much later than anticipated (in real-time) and anxiously walked into a doctor’s appointment, ready for her chemo to start. Willow was devastated and taken aback when she learned that her illness had advanced to stage 4 while she ignored it. But what did she anticipate happening? Doctors want to begin chemotherapy as soon as a cancer diagnosis is made for a reason. Whether you are pregnant or not, cancer still wants to kill you.

Only after learning that she might have started her treatment too late did Willow understand the seriousness of her decision. She neglected to consider the fact that losing his mother would be devastating for the child she already has. She never even considered what would occur if she had a healthy child but was unable to raise it. In fact, Willow didn’t even bother telling the father of her unborn child what was happening because she didn’t want him to have any say in a decision that might endanger her life and possibly the life of their unborn child.

Willow didn’t plan ahead, she didn’t think of others, and she certainly didn’t consider all the women who didn’t live in New York State but who are currently being forced by the government to forgo chemotherapy while pregnant. While Willow had the option to skip chemotherapy for a while, she chose to do so in a self-centered manner and without any consideration for the future. It’s getting more and more difficult to feel any pity for this fictional character, despite our desire to do so.
