Why General Hospital Won February Sweeps

During the February sweeps period, General Hospital went all out.

For lovers of soap operas, the months of February, May, and November used to be the trinity of the year. The midday and nighttime television ratings times are when programmes typically go all out to entice viewers in order to ascertain marketing rates. It appears that only General Hospital knew that sweeps were a thing in February 2023.

Where Was The Action Outside Port Charles?

For far too long now, viewing The Young and the Restless has been like watching paint dry, and February was no exception. The month came to a close with Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) daydreaming about living with either Adam (Mark Grossman) or Nick (Joshua Morrow), based on which brother was her baby’s father. Everyone talked, but no one did anything. Snore.

A young boy was made to choose between two selfish parents on The Bold and the Beautiful, and in order to avoid these individuals who would subject him to such treatment, he chose to live with his relative. Yes, compelling and moving, but sweepstakes deserving? Most likely not.

The offspring and grandkids of the supposedly deceased women fretted more about their love affairs than their lost loved ones while Days of our Lives took us on an odd trip through paradise. We also witnessed a crazy scientist use discarded cooking tools to attempt to unplug a man he had brainwashed. Okay, then.

If You Wanted Sweeps, You Needed General Hospital

The only soap on ABC, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in a month, thankfully offered a little piece of something for everyone throughout the entire month, letting us know that it recalled it was February sweeps while also keeping in mind that it is a soap opera.

It was a great month to be a Carly (Laura Wright) admirer. She was able to get away with concealing a significant secret from Willow and Nina for a complete nine months after previously concealing a significant secret from Nina (Cynthia Watros) regarding her other daughter, Nelle (Chloe Lanier), in the early months of 2020 and 2021. If you were a fan of Katelyn MacMullen, you got to experience an emotional voyage as Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) discovered that she only had a few weeks to live and that neither her mother nor her infant daughter could provide bone marrow or stem cells.

Even better, we got to see Willow ascend to paradise and meet Harmony (Inga Cadranel). It was difficult to avoid tuning in as some people pondered how Harmony even ended up in paradise in the first place, whether or not they enjoyed Willow.

However, the show still managed to work in some romance and give us a small taste of how wonderful Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) are despite Stuart’s limited taping schedule due to his role on the Disney series The Villains Of Valley View. If you were a Vanna fan, you didn’t get oodles of excitement as they spent their time hiding out in a safe house just outside Port Charles. Even though their plot didn’t really advance, it was fun to see Anna stalk the dishonest deputy mayor.

The nuptials of Curtis (Donnell Turner) and Portia (Brook Kerr) provided all the typical soap opera muck you could ask for. Portia almost called off her own rite to inform Curtis that he might be Trina’s father, but she persisted. The real drama, however, started when Trina’s (Tabyan Ali) feet received that bouquet following her conversation with Stella (Vernee Watson), and we got to witness a magnificent (possible) paternity revelation between a guilt-ridden mother and her distraught 20-year-old daughter. Score one for the Spencer supporters during sweeps because all of this culminated in that long-awaited smooch between Trina and Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez), which was more than worth the wait.

Then There Was Wyndemere

In February, Spoon Island was the spot to be for genuine non-stop soap sweeps activity. It began in the hospital chapel when Spencer informed Nikolas (Adam Huss) that he had seen the video in which Nikolas (falsely) admitted to shoving Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) off the ledge. It then took a turn for the worse when Nikolas vowed to separate Avery from Ava as the tape wound down (Maura West). She hit him over the head with a statuary as a consequence, leading her to believe he had passed away. She still thinks that in order to prevent the authorities from discovering his corpse, she needs to relocate it to a new location on Spoon Island. Nikolas’s actual death is still a juicy enigma.

Esme, an amnesic pregnant woman, met her eccentric mother, Heather Webber (Alley Mills), over at Spring Ridge as we watched Heather and Ryan (Jon Lindstrom) amuse and engage us while keeping us on the edge of our chairs wondering what they would do next.

During Ava’s second eventful night as Mistress of the Manor, when Felicia (Kristina Wagner) made her way to Spoon Island, we knew what triumph lay ahead. After Heather and Ryan had already taken Esme hostage and fled Spring Ridge, Ryan made it known that he intended to halt at Wyndemere and bring Ava along on their little journey. The expression on Ryan’s face when Ava and Felicia opened the door and he realised he had struck gold by having both of his interests together told us everything. One hell of a concluding week of sweeps was in store for us.

What a week it was, too. Esme gave birth on the living room floor, Ryan shot Ryan in the arm, but Mac (John J. York) took the kill shot, and Spencer eventually realised he had been duped and that both Ryan and Esme had targeted him to end his father’s life. Heather hooked Austin and outed herself as the serial killer.

All of these storylines have fresh strands to explore as February gives way to March, keeping us interested and demonstrating why General Hospital is presently the longest-running, still-airing written drama in television history. Happiest birthday, GH
