Even though she doesn’t receive as much action as she did in the past, Bobbie Spencer on GENERAL HOSPITAL is still a crucial component of the picture! You might not be aware of the former prostitute who frequently dated hazardous guys if you only know Barbara Jean as the current advice-giving Barbara Jean! The charming and gifted Jacklyn Zeman has played the part since the character’s debut in December 1977.
Formerly a prostitute who is now a nurse, Bobbie moved to Port Charles. She put on a friendly front and made friends with nurse Jessie Brewer, but in reality, she was a sneaky plotter looking to separate Scotty Baldwin from Laura Webber. In order to win Laura’s heart, she even invited her brother, Luke Spencer, to the area. Bobbie even went so far as to say she was carrying Scotty’s child, but her deception was discovered, and Laura and Scotty were wed.
Afterwards, Bobbie fell in love with mobster Roy DiLucca, who was shot and died in her arms. Although Bobbie and Laura’s rivalry persisted, she was a competent nurse and a devoted friend to others. After Luke and Laura fled from Frank Smith, she eventually started to adjust her attitude. When Laura and Luke finally got married, Bobbie made amends with her and even served as one of the bridesmaids.
Dr. Noah Drake and Bobbie had a passionate romance that ended because he didn’t want to commit. Bobbie even feigned to be blind to keep him around. She later had an affair with D.L. Brock, but he started to abuse her after they got married. Bobbie was accused of killing D.L. after his death, but Terri, his daughter, was actually responsible. After that, Bobbie wed Jake Meyer and suffered a brief paralysis after a DVX agent pricked her with a lethal syringe. Skeeter and Melissa’s mother, paraplegic Martha McKee, helped Bobbie get better, and she then decided to take care of their upbringing. However, they were difficult children, and Bobbie ended up in jail for saving Melissa from a life of forced prostitution. She was freed by Scotty, but she lost custody of the teenagers once Jake left.
Scotty burned Jake’s letters to Bobbie outlining his reasons for leaving this time because he wanted her. When she discovered his dishonesty, Bobbie dumped him and started seeing Gregory Howard, but that relationship too ended in failure due to Gregory’s marriage and political aspirations. Bobbie at last discovered happiness with Dr. Tony Jones. Bobbie, who was still anxious for a child, bought a child on the underground market. After a nasty custody dispute, she was granted custody of the kid, Lucas Jones.
The day their daughter B.J. was killed in a bus accident, Tony witnessed Bobbie flirting with Damian Smith as she was spying for Luke. Bobbie slept with Damian after Tony pushed her out but dumped him when she realized he had done it for a bet with Lucy Coe. After going through counseling, Bobbie and Tony were reunited. She eventually went to Stefan Cassadine after discovering him with Carly Roberts in bed, and they even got married! He was eventually revealed to be as nasty as Luke had forewarned, and she assisted her brother in exposing the scoundrel.
Bobbie found out that Carly was actually the daughter she’d given up for adoption when she was a teenager after she was engaged to Tony and pregnant with his child. Although Carly hated her mother, the arrival of Michael, her son, helped heal their relationship. Bobbie fell in love with Jerry Jacks, but the FBI showed up before their wedding, forcing him to flee. They resumed their connection after she learned Roy was still alive and working as a government agent. But, Bobbie was unable to forgive Roy because of the way in which he attempted to turn Sonny Corinthos over to the feds, which harmed Carly. As a result, they eventually lost friendship.
When her daughter was thought to be dead, Bobbie was in denial, and she was proven correct when Carly appeared at her own memorial. She and Scotty reunited again, but it didn’t last. Carly’s curiosity in her biological father made Bobbie unhappy, and she was much more upset when John Durant arrived in Port Charles. After being devastated by Tony’s passing after an encephalitis epidemic, Bobbie moved to Seattle in 2010 to be nearer to Lucas.
When Lulu Spencer was abducted in 2013 and Bobbie needed to support her family, she temporarily moved back to Port Charles. She later moved back after Heather Webber abducted Carly. She and Scotty resumed their relationship, and she and Lucy argued over him. Bobbie was there to help Luke learn the truth about his childhood and how he had slain their abusive father when he started acting abnormally. When Nelle Benson came to town and started making Carly’s life miserable, Bobbie reverted to her protective Mama Bear mentality.
Bobbie will always be on stage at the annual Nurses Ball performing, and she will always be there to provide Carly a shoulder to rely on anytime she needs one. Yet as Bobbie attempted to assist Lucas and Brad with a prospective custody dispute over their adopted son, she collapsed. She refused to allow Lucas to conduct the blood tests he wanted to because she thought she was only dehydrated. When she went to the doctor after Scott persuaded her to, she discovered she had type 2 diabetes. To reassure Bobbie that she wasn’t alone, Epiphany Johnson disclosed her own diagnosis to her. Scott also made the decision to propose, but she politely declined.
When the evil Shiloh conned her into thinking he was a cop and kidnapped Wiley, Bobbie felt terrible. She was also at a loss after Cyrus Renault, who had taken over operating the hospital, fired both her and Monica. Bobbie assisted by caring for the ailing Florence Grey in the safe house after Carly had Cyrus’ mother, Florence Grey, kidnapped. By agreeing to assist with the delivery of the child, Bobbie also attempted to assist Maxie Jones in defending her infant daughter from Peter August, but that strategy was unsuccessful. Regrettably, Detective Harrison Chase learned what Maxie had actually done with her daughter thanks to a slip of the tongue.
Before 2022 got underway, Bobbie was heartbroken to hear the news of her brother Luke’s passing. She had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn’t an accident, but rather that someone had killed him. She naturally supported Carly in her conflict with Nina in the spring, even going so far as to mock her and fling a drink in her face! Also, Bobbie advised her daughter to begin a new chapter in her life and examine her feelings for Drew. Carly was relieved to find Drew waiting for her after she became trapped in Jacksonville and Bobbie shocked her by flying down to check on her.
Bobbie was delighted to have Carly take on the family name when she confessed that following her divorce, she no longer wanted to be Carly Benson but Carly Spencer.
