At Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York, on January 6, 2023, the adored actor gently died away from natural causes.
Michael Levin, who was born on December 8th, 1932, joined the U.S. Navy before enrolling at the University of Minnesota. He continued on to California, where he studied acting with Robert Blake and Jack Nicholson. When the Minneapolis Guthrie Theater debuted in 1962, he kept polishing his skill there and, according to his son Jason, was thrilled to have worked there with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.
After relocating to New York, the actor found employment with the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut, as well as the Repertory Theatre at the Lincoln Center, both of which were directed by Jules Irving. Levin’s job as an Italian American reporter on Ryan’s Hope was a result of his appearance in an advertisement for Alitalia Airlines as an Italian spokeswoman.
In the first episode of the soap opera’s premiere, Levin made his debut as a main cast member. He received three consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series beginning in 1978 thanks to his character’s romance with Mary Ryan, who was brilliantly portrayed by Kate Mulgrew.
In total, Levin appeared in 1,074 episodes of the show, which culminated in 1989 with the marriage of his character to Leigh Kirkland (Felicity LaFortune). Dedicated viewers may remember that a young Yasmine Bleeth of Baywatch fame played Fenelli’s daughter.
Following Ryan’s Hope, Levin was cast as John Eldridge on As the World Turns and as Dr. Gould on All My Children. He made primetime appearances on N.Y.P.D., The Equalizer, Law & Order, and New York News, among other programmes.
The versatile actor appeared on Broadway in plays like The Royal Hunt of the Sun with David Carradine, Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real with Al Pacino, Sam Shepard’s Operation Sidewinder with Garrett Morris, and Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan with the late Colleen Dewhurst when he wasn’t appearing on daytime or primetime television.
He has just discovered love in woodworking. His wife Elizabeth, sons Jason and Aaron, and grandkids Veronica and Nico are left to mourn his passing. In this trying time, Soap Hub extends its heartfelt condolences to Michael Levin’s family, friends, and supporters.
