Holly Sutton Scorpio is trying to save the life of her son, Ethan.
It’s been déjà vu all over again for Emma Samms on General Hospital. When her character was first introduced, we learned that Holly Sutton was a con artist. And now, Holly’s been conning her pals once again. For her portrayal of a tortured mother, doing everything she can to save her son’s life, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors upon Samms.
Emma Samms – Performer of the Week
Fans were ecstatic to see Holly back in Port Charles despite the mystery behind her return to the screen; they were unconcerned with the circumstances surrounding her escape from her kidnappers. Then, niggling concerns started to emerge. For what purposes did she meet in secret with Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy)? What made her so secretive? Did she really not remember the last few years?
We witnessed a reclusive Holly who was yearning to confide in Robert and give him the truth. Over dinner at the Metro Court, she admitted to him, “I’ve been thinking a lot about us.” Before giving him a kiss, she said, “Enough talking,” emphasizing why she and he were one of GH’s most beloved couples in history. They talked about their earliest days together.
Holly bemoaned the fact that even while the time felt full, it passed far too quickly. She was right. Before Samms left daytime television to play Fallon Carrington Colby on the cast of the prime-time soap opera Dynasty, Robert and Holly enjoyed a brief but happy marriage in Port Charles. Ironically, she came back for a visit in 1992 right as Tristan was leaving.)
Holly was duped by a suspicious Robert into believing that he knew the location of the safehouse where Anna DeVane (Finola Hughes), who was on the run after being accused of shooting Lucy Coe, was staying. Holly sneaked a peek at the safe house’s address before calling the police with the information. Robert received confirmation that Holly was battling the bad guys because the location was a lie.
After the police raided the fake location, Robert confronted Holly at the docks and told her that she needed to explain herself. Holly’s ex-husband pressed her to reveal the duration of her employment with Victor. Holly was arrested once more for posing as an oil well owner, just as she had been years earlier.
A frustrated and tormented Holly cried out, “Yes, I’m doing by Victor’s order but not by choice.” “Not on purpose!” Robert was informed by Holly that she had been looking into Winston Rudge (David S. Lee) a few years prior, but that Victor had discovered her cover and had kidnapped her.
She sobbed as she described how Victor had killed her half-sister Paloma in front of her, a role Sutton played in the 1990s. Flashbacks showed Holly battling mightily for her freedom; those scenes were contrasted with Samms’ solemn recollection of Holly’s recent history. Holly was happy to report that although she had shot Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring), Holly hadn’t actually killed the actress.
Honorable mention: Daytime Emmy-winner Kelly Thiebaud (Dr. Britt Westbourne) and Kathleen Gati (Dr. Leisl Obrecht) are breaking our hearts as the reality of Britt’s Huntington’s disease continues to play out.
Robert was told by Holly that she had donned an Anna mask akin to the one that Cesar Faison (Anders Hove) had used to fool people into thinking he was Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan). She pleaded with Robert not to let on that Lucy was still alive because Victor would murder her son Ethan Lovett if he learned that she had deceived him (Nathan Parsons).
Holly told her ex-husband, “Victor’s holding him to get my cooperation.” “I’m doing everything I can to help everyone!” Later, when Victor questioned Holly’s sincerity, Holly was once more confronted with someone accusing her of lying. A dishonest Holly persuaded Victor, “For God’s sake Victor, you’re the only one I’m not lying to.” Holly was made fun of by the Cassadine bad guy for usually taking second place to Anna. (Huh? Has this man seen General Hospital’s Emma Samms?
Holly pushed back against Victor a little, saying that after he makes the world he’s so determined to make, he’ll be left alone. Victor told Holly to be careful, and Holly answered, without the slightest trace of apology, “Oh, I’m so sorry.” “I retract it. You are aware of your affection. Because I am aware of Robert’s love for me.
As Holly reassured the Cassadine-clad that he would have to continue to trust her, Samms and Shaughnessy’s characters proceeded to tease one another. Robert was made unconscious during a round of tequila shots, and she managed to steal his briefcase as proof that he could. However, we can’t help but feel that Victor, the man who is pressuring her to scam her friends, is now being duped in some way by the con artist. The Cassadine villain seems to have the upper hand, along with Ethan, but Holly, as portrayed by the charming Emma Samms, is our pick to win.
