Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For GH: Cynthia Watros

Cynthia Watros, who plays Nina on General Hospital, shone when she revealed the horrific truth about Willow.

Fans of General Hospital have been anticipating Cynthia Watros’ character Nina Reeves learning that Willow Tait is her daughter since last year. Watros, a Daytime Emmy winner, gave an excellent performance and was chosen as GH’s Performer of the Week by Soap Hub.

Viewers witnessed the puzzle pieces coming together, which ultimately resulted in Nina being told the truth about having twins. It was only a matter of time until Nina found out about Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) sickness and pregnancy when Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) and Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) disclosed their information. Carly is calculating, yes, but she wouldn’t let any hidden agendas stop Willow from receiving desperately needed bone marrow from her birth mother.

At the General Hospital chapel, Carly found Nina and informed her of the situation. Carly’s claim was first rejected by Nina, who claimed she did not have twins and that her only child, Nelle (Chloe Lanier), had been given to the Benson family in Florida. Carly said that Willow, one of the twins, was given to Harmony (Lena Cadranel).

The GH writers meticulously planned this disclosure, concluding each act or scene break with Nina gradually realising that Carly’s claims had some substance and that she wasn’t simply teasing her. Watros heightened her character’s emotional response to learning Willow was her child as Nina started to understand this was a monumental revelation.

Occasionally, Carly would scold Nina for keeping quiet about Sonny (Maurice Benard) being alive and amnesic in Nixon Falls. (At least Nina tried to contact Carly and tell her about Sonny, but Carly hung up on her.) This time, Nina portrayed the party that was hurt and unaware justly.

Nina was mostly in denial up until Carly said that she had evidence of Willow’s pregnancy. Nina was about to leave the chapel when she heard this statement and was stopped. “You stole my DNA, tested it illegally, without my knowledge or permission, and now what?” Nina marvelled stoically.

Nina was questioned by Carly as to why she would be lying about this considering the seriousness of Willow’s medical condition. Nina was furious and said rhetorically, “I don’t know Carly.” “I’m not sure why you act the way that you do. Maybe it’s because you lie? Or maybe because you despise me? Or is this some strange form of retaliation since I fell in love with Sonny?

Nina then flashed back to a number of interactions with Willow that illustrated the highs and lows of their relationship; strangely, many of these chats were on motherhood and family. When Nina and Willow debated over whether Nina should visit her grandson Wiley, Nina previously vented her rage at Willow (Viron Weaver, who, by the way, is proving himself to be a fine child actor). Nina understood where to target her rage, though, once she conceded that Carly was probably speaking the truth. As Carly began to leave, a breathless Nina said, “You’re a monster.”

Nina wanted to say one more thing before she left. Nina reminded her foe, “You made me feel like the slime of the earth for a year.” “You incessantly complained that I was ruining your family! How about my household? How could you prevent me from being with my child?

Sincere repentant Carly replied Nina may shout at her all she wanted once the test was over. A distraught Nina found little consolation in her words. Go to hell, you self-centered shite! Nina yelled. “I’ll protect my daughter!”

Also deserving of praise is Cynthia Watros, who last week delved headfirst into a nightmare/fantasy scenario in which Willow imagined losing both Wiley and her kid to Nina. Watros was given the opportunity to portray Nina as Willow perceives her to be—selfish and domineering—things that Nina, paradoxically, is not. This is wonderful news for Willow at this time.
