On General Hospital, Kathleen Gati demonstrated how Leisl Obrecht is still grieving the death of her daughter.
“Obrecht is in an angered condition” read my DVR’s description of a recent General Hospital show. I’m serious. Elizabeth Webber was the target of Kathleen Gati’s character’s rage, which was fueled by the pointless and premature death of Britt Westbourne. Gati has won our admiration just as Dr. O did.
Kathleen Gati – Performer of the Week
Even though it makes us regretful to think that Britt (Daytime Emmy winner Kelly Thiebaud) has passed on to that illustrious soap opera in the heavens, GH is making the most of the drama that has resulted from her demise. Leisl (Kathleen Gati) was correct to be furious with the nurse when she discovered that Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) had kept quiet about Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) in order to stop the authorities from looking for the Hook (AKA Heather Webber).
Gati has transformed what could have been a two-dimensional character into a fully realised human being who is capable of expressing great affection and experiencing excruciating agony throughout her time as Dr. O. During their altercation at General Hospital, Leisl smacked Liz across the face. But compared to how Leisl made Liz feel after she orally expressed her emotions, the agony from that slap was nothing.
Right or wrong, Leisl is certain that her Britta would still be living if Liz hadn’t remained quiet. If Liz could go back, she said, then… No, you can’t! Leisl told her furiously. Leisl is not the same person she was in the past; whereas, in the past, she would have exacted cruel retribution on Liz. I wouldn’t inflict my anguish on anyone, not even you, the mother in agony said.
Leisl isn’t all that different, though. If Liz gets a call from fate, she won’t cry. Leisl snapped, “You spread what you harvest. Then, as if her sorrow had immobilised her, she stood there almost unable to move. Niece Nina gracefully took her aunt’s elbow and escorted her away.
Characters on the programme converse with Leisl in an effort to elicit specific responses from her. Leisl will instead interpret the comment literally and react in a manner that is entirely rational — for her. Every single time this happens, Kathleen Gati delivers the phrase masterfully.
As an illustration, Nina admitted to Leisl that she is aware of her desire to assign responsibility for Britt’s passing. I know someone! Leisl exploded. “My Britta is gone because of Nurse Baldwin! Justice must be served for my daughter.
Then Leisl directed her rage at Scott (Kin Shriner), Liz’s devoted ex-husband. Scott’s decision to stand with Liz has permanently changed his relationship with Leisl. She thinks Scott also has Britt’s blood on his hands. (Unfortunately, no wedding in the park with poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning being read for these two anytime soon.)
Dr. O might be feeling like she doesn’t have much to live for with both her son, Nathan/James, and her daughter (the always missed Ryan Paevey). She couldn’t help but be impacted upon hearing that she is a possible donor option to save Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) life. She cried, and we can only assume that at least some pleasure filled her spirit. She sobbed as she concurred with Nina that they were “fortunate” that Willow’s life could possibly be spared. Congratulations to Kathleen Gati, who never fails to amuse audiences by giving Dr. Leisl Obrecht a dose of heart, emotion, and expected unpredictability.
Honorable mention: What should you wear when the authorities are about to open a door that you have cause to think conceals the decaying body of your deceased husband? Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West) was obviously unsure. As Ava kept attempting to figure out what a convincing reaction should be, bravo to West for showing a variety of facial expressions. Even though the scenario was tense, the talented West was able to effectively inject some humour into the high-stakes setting.D
