The two actors dig deep to explain the way they handle the material.
Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Tabyana Ali share an intensity onscreen that has caused fans to fall in love with the pairing of their characters, Spencer Cassadine and Trina Robinson. Now that young actors explain their process of handling some of those challenging scenes.
Nicholas Alexander Chavez & Tabyana Ali Dig Deep
At a recent Coastal Entertainment Zoom event, Chavez and Ali spent the evening with several hundred “Sprina” supporters. Autumn, one of the audience members, inquired as to how they get ready for tough sequences like the ones where Trina visited Spencer in Pentonville.
Ali pushed Chavez to go first, and Chavez replied, “I go home, and I finish my homework.” That involves examining what my goals are in a scene, correct? Therefore, my strategy is based on what I want and what I’m ready to do to acquire it. Additionally, I divide my scenes into beats. It truly embodies a Stanislavskian method of acting.
He continued, “There is a technical side to all of that, and that homework gets done, I’d say, around five days before I film it because that’s about when I get the screenplay. There is only so much you can do because as I work on all of my tasks, Tabyana works diligently on all of hers, the director and producers work on their tasks, and everyone’s processes converge quite late.
“On the day we [tape] what you guys see, our processes collide. Therefore, we blocked it just before filming began, and that was the first time we received any blocking information and the first time we discussed the scenario with the director. Occasionally, Tabyana will work a few days beforehand, but frequently, Tabyana and I will be performing that scenario for the first time. Being very, very, very prepared and then being willing to let go of part of that preparation in favor of what other creatives need to have a good take of the scene are both necessary because the processes clash very late and it alters a little bit.
Tabyana Ali started by saying, “I want to talk the day of.” “I believe the way we arrived at that point was through a collaborative effort even though we each had our own individual issues, as you mentioned. We were both trying to discuss — okay, this is my point of view on it, this is my point of view, now how are we going to approach it in the same direction?, where I felt like maybe this could have been taken as being completely vulnerable with you. I try to get answers. I’m trying to figure out myself and you an Therefore, there was a lot of back and forth on the actual day as well as script dissection and understanding of our points of view.
They also discussed how to compromise when one party is adamant about something. Chavez acknowledged that she occasionally would point out something that he had missed. I’m so appreciative, so being receptive to things you hadn’t previously seen is great.
