Many expected the mystery man watching Curtis and Portia on GENERAL HOSPITAL to be his father, but there are still many unanswered questions. who plays Marshall on General Hospital? In the Oct. 18 episode of the soap opera, Robert Gossett made his acting debut as the part. Although first given the name “Stalker,” the character was eventually revealed to be Marshall Thomas Ashford. Before Gossett came back, the part was briefly recast with Damien Leake in early 2022 for a few episodes.
Gossett may be recognized by viewers from one of his numerous appearances in primetime throughout the years. He started working in the late 1980s and has appeared as a guest on a number of television programs, including THE COSBY SHOW, AMEN, QUANTUM LEAP, CHEERS, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, 7TH HEAVEN, JUDGING AMY, DRAGNET, NYPD BLUE, BONES, and ER. On shows like SILK STALKINGS, BEVERLY HILLS, 90210, DARK ANGEL, THE CLOSER, MAJOR CRIMES, and THE OATH, he has also played recurring roles.
Gossett’s daytime acting debut isn’t in GH either. He played a cop in the 1990 NBC thriller SANTA BARBARA, and from 2001 to 2004 he portrayed the sleazy lawyer Woody Stumper in the drama PASSIONS. He appeared on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS in 2007 as an officer, then in 2020 he made a second appearance as Newman employee Dan Szymborski, giving Victoria guidance as she took over the family business.
A mysterious man approached the bartender to inquire about how live music was scheduled for the club after listening in on conversations between Curtis Ashford and Portia Robinson for a while. But the man had already left when she asked Curtis the question. Then he arrived at the hospital, introduced himself as “Marshall,” and went up to TJ Ashford, complaining of stomach problems. The patient inquired about his family as TJ examined him, and when he mentioned his uncle, he broke down in tears. When left alone for a while, Marshall told TJ to hold onto his family before leaving. The stranger observed them leave as Curtis arrived to pick up TJ so they could see a movie.
Just before Joey Novak was severely assaulted and taken to the hospital, Marshall was also spotted there with the mafia. Liz offered to create a sketch based on Portia’s description after she ran into the man and she got wary of his inquiries. TJ recognized his missing patient as soon as he viewed the drawing, but Curtis wasn’t familiar with the man. Then, when musicians abruptly cancelled at The Savoy, the mysterious man made plans with Linc to save the day.
He identified himself as Marshall Thomas Ashford, his father, when Curtis challenged him. Marshall knew too much for Curtis’ claim that his father had passed away to be a fabrication. Marshall offered to take things slowly when they reconnected after being criticized for abandoning him and his sibling. For decades, he remained reticent to discuss the precise circumstances that led to his faked death and disappearance. He made it plain to Stella Henry during their chat that Curtis was aware of his secret, but he promised not to inform him.
While out on a date with Epiphany Johnson, Marshall started to flirt with her but afterwards experienced chest symptoms and had to be taken to the hospital. He hadn’t suffered a heart attack, but he needed to change medications because of a blood pressure issue. Shaken, Curtis decided to try building a future with his father rather than continuing to explore his father’s past. However, Curtis enlisted Drew Cain in the investigation as the two men came up with a strategy to figure out what was going on after Stella’s response to Marshall’s accusation that he had become involved with some hazardous people.
Drew extended a job offer to Marshall at Aurora Media’s music branch but stated that a background check would be required. Marshall declined, but later admitted to Curtis that he was interested in the position but was worried Drew’s inquiry might bring up information about his criminal past. He acknowledged that despite the records being sealed, he had been imprisoned for a non-violent offense 40 years prior. Although Curtis valued his candor, he continued to worry what he was withholding from them.
Marshall ultimately felt it would be best to leave town, but Curtis met him on the way out and revealed that he had obtained a copy of his criminal records and discovered that he had been detained at a mental health facility after being arrested during a protest. Marshall left Port Charles outraged at the invasion of his privacy, and TJ and Molly eventually found him there and convinced him to go back to his family’s house in Port Charles.
Marshall later acknowledged having a schizophrenia diagnosis and avoiding his family out of fear of upsetting them. Marshall was welcomed by everyone, and he even teamed up with Curtis to assist establish Trina Robinson’s innocence after she was falsely accused of a crime. Epiphany Johnson and Marshall reconciled, and Marshall encouraged Johnson to pursue her goal of becoming a doctor. Although Marshall was pleased to be present for Curtis and Portia’s wedding, he was hesitant to perform for fear of having another incident interfere with the wonderful occasion. He did, however, wind up performing at the reception when the time came.
