GH’s Maurice Benard & Marcus Coloma On Channeling Angst Into Art

Marcus Coloma shares how channeling intense emotions saved him.

Marcus Coloma from General Hospital last stopped by Maurice Benard’s State Of Mind in January 2022. Since becoming best friends, the two former coworkers have gained popularity on TikTok for their funny series of short films featuring celebrities including Johnny Wactor, Kin Shriner, Finola Hughes, and Cynthia Watros.

Their discussion in the most recent State Of Mind video podcast was more like a private conversation between two friends than it did an interview. They talked about a variety of subjects, including Coloma’s early years and Benard’s 32+ years of marriage to Paula.

Sonny Corinthos’ character Benard mentioned Coloma’s (Nikolas Cassadine) interest in performing. Coloma went back to where his idea first came from. “I believe that making things is what inspires me, and I believe that as a child, a grocery store is a magical place.” I used to play with the air conditioning vents in cars like they were spaceships, the speaker said. The adventure had something to it.

Like when the youngsters watched The Goonies, Stand By Me, and The Explorers, in which River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke built a starship and traveled across space.

Early on, his spirit of adventure drove him away from the family home. I arrived in Santa Rosa when I was 16 or 17. “My two roommates were addicted to crack, but I avoided narcotics,” he said to set the scenario. I quit college after falling in love with this girl.

I would talk to her on the phone throughout the night, and I simply felt that I wasn’t cut out for school. I had trouble reading. I wasn’t done with my book. I couldn’t read then, but I can now. At the age of 18, I essentially left college and relocated to Los Angeles.

I was consuming a lot of Mel Gibson filmography. Robert Willis T.J. Cruise Those were the 1990s. Coloma explained the epiphany that inspired her to serve as his outlet. “Mel Gibson’s emotions are the thing. It was the wrath he displayed in Lethal Weapon.

When I first watched Mel Gibson, I remarked, “He’s an adult, and he is articulating the things that I am feeling, and not only that, but he is making it cool.” Like the scene in the trailer where he was crying uncontrollably while holding a gun to his head. That was very incredible.

The craft of expressing those powerful emotions he had felt since he was young appealed to the aspiring actor and director. “Acting was like a spiritual journey trying to figure out humanity, trying to figure out myself, trying to figure out mental health, all these things that you do explore as an actor,” the actor said.

Marcus Coloma: The Heart Of The Matter

The remainder of the “interview” unfolded like a late-night session of dissecting someone’s exterior to discover their true nature. The two on-screen villains talked on how to win over viewers and turn a one-dimensional bad guy into someone who the audience will root for.

Benard discussed the specifics of how, with a little assistance from Tony Geary (Luke Spencer) and Vanessa Marcil, he changed the mobster Sonny Corinthos’s persona to show the viewers a vulnerable side (Brenda Barrett).

Benard’s past with his wife Paula was further explored by Marcus Coloma, who persuaded the host to divulge information about their early romance and had him give Coloma relationship advice.
