Desperate times could force Esme to take desperate action!
There are certain soap tropes which fans can see coming a mile away. When two characters are shown driving separate cars on a rainy night, there’s going to be an accident. When a murder is committed, the police will always arrest the wrong person. And when two women are pregnant at the same time… those babies are gonna be switched.
Now, reason would dictate that in the case of Willow and Esme from General Hospital, it can’t possible be the goal. Given that Nelle gave Brad Willow’s child in return for his adopted kid, who had unexpectedly passed away, Brad had previously subjected Willow to this nightmare situation. The truth wouldn’t surface until a very long time later, at which point Willow would learn that the kid she had given up for adoption had perished.
The fates wouldn’t be so callous as to put Willow in that situation once more, would they?
However, Esme is seated there, possibly suffering from forgetfulness while pregnant. Whether or not the young woman has a true memory of her history, the events that are taking place in the present must have made her aware that numerous Cassadine family factions are interested in her unborn child.
Esme’s perfect situation, in her opinion? If a paternity test revealed that neither Nikolas nor Spencer had a claim to her child, they would be unable to raise it. So once the baby is here, why not, if the chance arises, hide the child with Michael and Willow until paternity testing can establish that “her” child does not have a drop of Cassadine blood.
The following phase, however, might be more challenging: Finding a way to get her real child and flee the area without incurring the combined fury of the Corinthos, Quartermaine, and Cassadine clans!
Of course, if this is indeed Esme’s state of mind at the time, it would appear to indicate that — amnesia or not — she is still the evil young woman we have come to know despite the innocent act she has been working ever since taking her second dive from the parapet.
