In a new Soap Hub feature, Maura West looks back to her General Hospital past and shares some behind-the-scenes tidbits about this shocking scene.
Ava Jerome has come a long way on General Hospital in the past five or so years, which is difficult to believe. She tried to set her antagonists, Carly and Sonny, on fire in May 2017 when she was literally and symbolically cornered, but she actually caused more harm to herself. Her actor, Maura West, recently reflected on the past and shared her thoughts on filming those incredible sequences.
Maura West: General Hospital Flashback Friday
The actress was asked to recollect a memorable scene from her past in which something happened during filming that perhaps the fans weren’t aware of at the time during a Coastal Entertainment Zoom event this past weekend with co-star Avery Kristen Pohl (Esme Prince). West pondered about it and came up with a killer from the violent background of her character.
Ava tossed this lamp down in an exciting scenario a few years ago, and Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) were present. The majority of the audience remembered when Ava’s enemies questioned her about tampering with their son Morgan’s medication. The argument took place in her own gallery’s storage room, and by the time it was through, Ava was prepared to murder.
“The fire department and special effects personnel are always present when they have you working with fire. And do you recall Ava before she was totally burned? She yelled, “No more!” and tossed this lantern on the ground, setting everything on fire.
She went on to describe the situation for everyone, saying that Ava had to be unconscious on the floor. I was quite anxious because I could smell the fire and it was so close to me. When someone ran in to put it out with a fire extinguisher, I wondered, “How close was that fire to me?” And the only other thing I can think of that’s somewhat similar is… The audience is unaware of the actor’s struggles. It was frightening to be lying there, aware that the fire was getting closer while I was unable to move and was supposed to be unconscious, she chuckled.
In any case, you would have never known because the scenes were immaculate. Oh, how things have changed since then. In fact, Ava has almost gained respectability and now has cordial interactions with Carly and Sonny. Five years might bring quite a lot of change, but Maura West’s portrayal of Ava Jerome on General Hospital will always be outstanding.
