Did the soap find an off-ramp and quickly take it?
For the past year, General Hospital fans have felt like they’ve been screaming into the void that there is something just not right about the pairing of Elizabeth Webber and Hamilton Finn, and it feels like we are finally being heard.
Red Flags From The GH Start
Even though Rebecca Herbst and Michael Easton are both seasoned pros who have worked together successfully on several occasions throughout their soap opera careers, there was something odd about Elizabeth and Finn right from the start. This relationship had a forced feel to it right from the start because Elizabeth seemed to be doing nothing but watching as Finn seemed to push his way into her life whether she wanted him there or not.
With Finn, a persona who has never been anyone’s pushover, Elizabeth seemed to watch from the sidelines of her own manufactured “relationship” as this man swung into her life and family without ever having been on a single date. When she never asked him to take charge or push boundaries, Finn wouldn’t let her make decisions on her own. For a very long time, this alleged love tale felt more disturbing than moving since he treated Liz like a child rather than treated her like an equal.
In fact, this plot line made Liz lifeless while degrading the eccentric Finn, a character who was previously likeable but has been anything but for months. It was difficult to dispute the claim that this connection was emotionally abusive, which was made by many fans.
General Hospital Finds A Way Out — And Proves Fans’ Point
Finally, it appears that GH has discovered an exit for this utterly hated coupling and is using it to great effect. Elizabeth recently demonstrated her return to form when she assisted Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma) in holding Esme Prince, who is pregnant, hostage in a Wyndemere tower. Since Nikolas has been Liz’s best friend since high school and a previous boyfriend, the plot makes sense and incorporates historical events. She would assist him in covering up any crime, and she did so when he had Hayden Barnes shot in the head.
Elizabeth didn’t waste any time in telling Finn that his assumption that the lady he hasn’t yet managed to get into bed with is pregnant is accurate when he noticed prenatal vitamins both at Wyndemere and in her hands. He knew it couldn’t be him, so he inquired who the father was. She told him it was Nikolas right away and didn’t turn around. Even Liz knew she had discovered her own way out of this ludicrous relationship; she could have easily dismissed him by saying the vitamins were for a patient.
Finn’s exaggerated response should have quickly convinced Elizabeth that she made the right choice as the ostensibly mild-mannered doctor busied himself smashing lab glass while not at all masking his man’s suffering. All that was visible, in truth, was his contempt for Elizabeth for daring to irritate his delicate sensibilities while he felt like he wasted so much time on her. Finn is a poor man.
This Is Where The General Hospital Fun Begins
After Elizabeth admitted to her major lie, the rest of the story is tumultuous and soapy while yet staying true to Elizabeth’s persona and her relationship with Nikolas. If she can fake being pregnant for months on end and then shows up with a child who just so happens to be her adored Franco Baldwin’s (Roger Howarth) young niece or nephew, that may have some major repercussions.
Liz’s inclusion in the Pregnant Rapunzel in the Tower story gave the plot the extra dimension it required to go beyond a lust-driven father getting his son’s girlfriend pregnant. This plot now has all the liveliness it needs thanks to the revelation that Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom) and Heather Webber (Alley Mills) are Esme’s psychopathic parents. In addition, Liz and Finn appear to be blown to pieces during the procedure. That is a good way to begin 2023.
