On September 18, 1992, Vanessa Marcil made her General Hospital debut as the jet-setting, wealthy Brenda Barrett. It’s difficult to imagine, but that was thirty years ago!
We’re going back in time to remember Brenda Barrett’s time in Port Charles to mark the anniversary of the day she was officially introduced to the world as Brenda Barrett.
Brenda’s opening scene (which may be viewed here) is her interfering with Julia Barrett, her sister, who had been in charge of her money.
In an effort to control Brenda, Julia compelled her to show up by closing her accounts, but all Brenda wanted was her money back. She ultimately chose to remain in Port Charles even after her sister moved away, where she became friends with Julia’s ex-boyfriend Ned Ashton.
Brenda then grew close to the rest of the Quartermaine family and had a brief relationship with Jagger Cates. She then went on to become a model, business partner with her closest friend Lois Cerullo in running L&B Records, a philanthropist, and a close friend of Robin Scorpio.
Of course, her romance with Sonny Corinthos, which was marked by a lot of love and much more turmoil, is what many remember her for the most. They did wed, but not before he abandoned her at the altar in an earlier effort at marital happiness. Given that he is a crime leader, it was obviously done for her own protection, but the betrayal still hurt and she broke down.
Brenda wasn’t exactly naive in their relationship either; once, she wore a wire to show that everyone had misjudged Sonny’s character. When he learned about it, everything happened as he had anticipated.
Though Sonny was Brenda’s great love, she also had a protracted romance with Jasper “Jax” Jacks, which fueled the men’s long-standing rivalry, as well as her own with Sonny’s oft-wife Carly Corinthos.
Brenda was engaged to Jax when she last visited Port Charles in 2013, but their engagement ended after he learned she had met with Sonny covertly. Brenda informed Sonny she loved him and urged him to go with her before she left town. She departed alone when he rejected her.
Although a small but committed group of viewers have long searched for signs that Brenda might be coming back to be with Sonny, his portrayer recently shattered their dreams.
In an interview with Soaps on the Daytime Emmys red carpet, Maurice Benard was asked if Sonny and Brenda will have another chance at love any time soon. He said categorically, “No.” The actor explained that he and Marcil were engaged in a different sort of endeavor.
