The adored GH and B&B star remembers that period with affection.
Despite being set in a specific era, The Wonder Years was more popular than you might expect. GH and B&B star Alley Mills, who portrayed Kevin Arnold’s mother Norma for the full run from 1988 to 1993, explains why.
Alley Mills Looks Back On The Wonder Years
Mills was questioned about what it was like to be on such a wonderful and famous show that was adored by so many people during a recent Coastal Entertainment fan Zoom event with co-star and on-screen daughter Avery Kristen Pohl (Esme) from General Hospital.
The recollection was clearly emotional for Mills, but she said, “The reality is when you are in something well written—or in a play by Tennessee Williams-well written—that performance was so beautifully written. “I cried every half hour, and it was so common. I’m not sure what strands that program touched.
She continued, “I spoke to a small children’s all-black school in New Haven, Connecticut. She was concerned that they might not understand the show’s 1960s setting. “I believed this to be America’s equivalent of the white bread performance. It’s untrue. It reminds me of a time when I’d return home from school, these kids said, and it makes me think of a time when they weren’t even aware of that time. He didn’t have any cookies baking when he said, “It reminds me of the time you come home and smell cookies baking…,” though.
“Reminds me of a time when you come home, and you didn’t have to duck from the window due to the gunshots,” the third child remarked, she continued. And as those youngsters watched The Wonder Years, I thought, “Wow, you know, it’s reaching such a wide variety of people. For me, that was the brilliance of that performance. Alley Mills had a fantastic time being a part of something that meant so much to so many people.
She exclaimed, “I felt so insanely fortunate to portray that role for seven years. I enjoyed it. It was wonderful the entire time. The actors simply said, “We’re all really good friends,” when asked. Most of them were nine years old when they were adults now. I was smitten.
